{"id":1086,"date":"2015-05-20T15:18:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-20T19:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/longislandskydiving.com\/?p=1086"},"modified":"2024-10-24T11:14:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T15:14:31","slug":"skydiving-myths-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/longislandskydiving.com\/blog\/skydiving-myths-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"Skydiving Myths Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>There&#8217;s a lot of misinformation out there about skydiving, so we&#8217;d like to share the truth behind 5 commonly held skydiving myths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth #5: Your First Skydive Must be a Tandem Skydive<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern day skydive training does not require you to make a tandem skydive first &#8211; you can enroll in a static line or Accelerated Free Fall training program and have a parachute on your back for your first jump!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth #4: When Your Parachute Opens, You Ascend<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve all seen videos of skydivers who seem to go up after the parachute deploys &#8211; it&#8217;s an optical illusion. What you&#8217;re actually seeing is the videographer&nbsp;continuing to descend while the skydiver is dramatically slowing down as the parachute opens&#8230; giving the appearance that they&#8217;re actually going up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Breathtaking high altitude acrobatic skydiving - Red Bull Skycombo\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Oxc-hhQldBE?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth #3: Everyone Falls at the Same Speed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember when Wylie Coyote fell at the same speed as the anvil? It&#8217;s not the same! The heavier the object, the faster it will fall. Another cool thing that affects free fall speed is drag. If you wear a very baggy jumpsuit, you&#8217;ll fall slower than someone with a similar body shape who is wearing a skin-tight jumpsuit. Free fall is also affected by surface area. Someone falling in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/7\/6020\/5981472058_8a17036d1f_z.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">belly to earth position<\/a>\u00a0will fall slower than someone falling in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.skydiveaz.com\/images\/default-source\/experianced-default-page\/freefly-and-vertical-formation-skydiving.jpg?sfvrsn=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">head to earth position.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth #2: Conversations in Free Fall<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine sticking your head out of the window of your car while driving down the freeway at 120mph&#8230; and then talking to someone. Rip cords are a thing of the past. Today, sport skydivers deploy their parachutes by throwing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockskymarket.com\/spare-parts-\/1363-monkey-fist-handles-spare-parts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a little ball\u00a0<\/a>that looks like a hackey sack into the air. That little hackey sack is attached to a small parachute known as the &#8216;pilot&#8217; chute. When the pilot chute catches wind it inflates and releases a closing pin which keeps the container (backpack) closed. With the pin released, the parachute comes out of the container, catches air and begins the deployment sequence of the parachute.
